A few days ago, when Roman Giertych, the minister of education was dismissed, the press made a few short interviews with the new (temporary, to say honestly) minister Ryszard Legutko from PiS. One of the topics raised was a recent decision of Giertych, who made the religious education grade included in the mean. The new minister expressed his concerns about this idea and suggested that he may soon abolish it. The reaction of the Church representatives was immediate. Abp Głódź (one of the strongest supporters of Tadeusz Rydzyk) said: “The new minister of education began his rule with a conflict with the Church. If he wants a conflict and social disharmony, he will have it. His declaration to remove the religious education from the list of subject included in the mean, without consulting with the Church, for me is arrogance. The Episcopate will take a stand on this within a few days. The religious education is not an experimental field, neither is the Church a mannequin which you can use as a Guinea pig.“.

Foreign readers (especially French) could be shocked by this, we are not. This year r.e. has been introduced in some Polish kindergartens. Also, there are no religious classes other than catholic available in Polish schools. This looks like a desperate struggle for young audience, probably influenced by the falling number of new clerics, which is still the highest in Europe.

The phrase “DIVISION OF THE STATE AND THE CHURCH” should be carved on some people’s foreheads with a chisel, if they cannot see it already written in the constitution.

Jarosław Kaczyński has recently given an interview to Rzeczpospolita daily. Of all answers given, the one that we found most interesting explained why Janusz Kaczmarek became a member of his government.

Q: The annual outcome of your governing so far is winning three powerful political opponents: Janusz Kaczmarek, Andrzej Lepper and Roman Giertych. All three were your coalition partners, they know exactly what are the relations inside your government and they are successful at criticizing you.

J. Kaczyński: But this is yet another proof that the struggle for changes in Poland is powerful. Now everyone laughs at [our concept of - edit.] the plot. Yet Kaczmarek’s example shows that the plot against us exists; moreover, it’s strong as hell if it could manage to insert its men even into government like ours. And the other two gentlemen… I’m sorry.

We are damn proud of our strength and cleverness!

It turns out that the military parade that marched the streets of Warsaw was quite a good idea. Crowds of thousands Warsaw citizens proved it best. The President looked a bit ashamed welcoming them, but the aircraft pilots really lived up to the show. We ask for more next year. Photo by Morgana Le Fay.

When it comes to our politics, it seems that the answer to the above question is “randomly” - any choice will be a hit. Probably the highest-ranked apologetic henchman of our government, Janusz Kaczmarek needed only a few short statements to lose all credibility that the intelligentsia granted him for uncovering the dirty mechanisms of our administration of justice. On Monday morning he denied having received a proposal to run for the Prime Minister: “There has been no such proposal (from LiS representatives - edit.), but I admit having received a call of support from Roman Giertych.” However, along with the LiS’s motion, his consent to be a candidate was attached - and it was dated Sunday. That’s the first example. The other one refers to the phone calls, that Ziobro supposedly made to Kaczmarek shortly after Barbara Blida’s suicide. “Janusz, help me, you know how weak was the evidence we had“; but a few days later we heard “No, it was my opinion that we were short of evidence. I had the opportunity to be present at a meeting where this case was discussed and I expressed my opinion as the Minister of the Interior. But minister Ziobro didn’t see it that way, in his opinion there was evidence“. It they go on talking like that, our limits of lies heard per day that one can bear will soon be exceeded…

All signs show that we will soon (most probably - tomorrow) say goodbye to one of our most frequent guests, Roman “The Educator” Giertych. Predicting his miserable fate of a rejected lover, he published his farewell letter. Having nothing to lose he even dared say things straight: “I am finishing my mission that I undertook in the education. The political circumstances, especially my objection to using special services for political provocations is the reason for my dismissal. If I turned my head against wickedness, lawlessness and brutal violations of the law, I am sure that I’d keep my post.”. However cynically his words sound, Roman turned out to be the bravest defender of democracy in IVth RP. We wonder what else we will learn during the following days of the electoral campaign.

If we had anything to add to Andrzej Lepper’s yesterday statement where he claimed to have been warned about the CBA’s operation by Zbigniew Ziobro himself, we’d like like to remind Mr Lepper that he filed a notification to the prosecutor’s office where he accuses Zbigniew Wassermann of failing to notice him about the operation being conducted in his Ministry…

But we’ve got a far more important call which we really want to reply to. Jarosław Kaczyński suggested that a possible date of the early election is 21th October and added “I want this election to be a survey and a question: what is the Poland you want?“.

Andrzej Lepper yesterday announced that his press conference scheduled for today will be deeply shocking. This morning he revealed that he learned about the CBA’s operation from minister Ziobro: “On 14th June at 8 PM I met Zbigniew Ziobro in my office. We were supposed to be talking about the current proceedings against Samoobrona. Our talk was a bit longish. Ziobro was very effusive, he talked about many issues. The minister told me very clearly that I should I pay attention to what I were doing, as the CBA was carrying out a very widespread operation in the Ministry of Agriculture which concerned lifting the arability of certain lands”. To put it shortly, he accused the Minister of Justice of a quite serious violation of regulations, if not of revealing an official secrets. What would every wrongfully accused do? He’d shout that it’s not true, that these are insinuations, that he will sue… What does minister Ziobro do? According to his press office he’s “astonished” and “would like to have a minute to make his mind”. Does that process include phone calls begining with “Jarek, help…”?

“Ladies and gentlemen, make yourselves comfortable, sit back & enjoy the warfare.”

We begin our TMW series with Janusz Kaczmarek’s letter to Zbigniew Ziobro, of course delivered to the addressee by the media (these days it seems to work faster than the post as well as ensure that the recipient reads the message):

“I appeal to you to apply law with respect to law & order. Your actions, including orders given to the ABW [Internal Security Agency] to invigilate, search and humiliate my closest cooperatives are driven by either your private war or your intention to hide your part in the so-called “leakage of the CBA’s special operation”. It is not without significance that searched were the persons whom I pointed for questioning as witnesses.
For the Republic of Poland to be a democratic law-abiding state and not the incarnation of the return to past ages, I ask you to apply law and justice to your person as well.
Due to the character of the actions mentioned above, this letter is made known to the public.

Janusz Kaczmarek”

The Prime Minister dismissed the Minister of Interior Janusz Kaczmarek. The reason was the suspicion of his involvment in the leakage concerning the CBA’s operation in the Ministry of Agriculture. According to Jarosław Kaczyński, he has been cheated by minister Kaczmarek who drastically abused his trust. “That’s why I couldn’t wait any longer”. What did the minister do? A time ago he was supervising investigations which were key to PiS, including the forgery of Jarosław’s [SB] folder, Donald Tusk’s billboards (allegedly financed by PZU), the alleged lustrical blackmail of Zyta Gilowska and “the potato scandal”. Why did he fell from the boss’s grace? We can’t wait to hear an explanation, and something tells us it will be made public sooner than usually.

In the meantime, behold the PiS’s new ad:

Not wanted for robbing a bank or killing someone, but wanted by the state for work. The Ministry of Finance prepared a project of resolution defining the basic salary in the Customs Service. Among the positions included in it we have a chaplain for customs chambers (16 in Poland) and the dean on the level of ministry. The spokesman of the Customs Chamber in Warsaw explains this idea with the need to provide the customs officers with priestly care. The customs do already have their chaplain, but he is not officially employed yet. The Ministry adds that they haven’t yet decided whether each customs chamber will have one, or a few chaplains. We have a few ideas of what these priests can do: explain the officers that it’s bad to steal, use the confession to learn about bribery, confiscate the smuggled alcohol and give it away to their collar-mates for conducting masses…
